Speaker Scotland meets with Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Minister-explore building “friendship” between respective Parliaments

Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Barton Scotland, on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 met with the Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Relations Minister in the Speaker’s Office, Public Buildings, Brickdam. During the visit the Ambassador and the Speaker explored ways to build a working relationship (friendship) between the Parliaments of the two countries.
The Deputy Finance Minister was accompanied by Mr. Otar Berdzenishvih, Ambassador to Guyana, and Ms. Mariam Shania, Second Secretary Ministry of foreign Affairs, Georgia.
He explained that Georgia is very interested in foreign policy and is therefore looking forward to working closely with Guyana especially in the areas of education and tourism. He further disclosed to the Speaker that his country is at present providing training five Guyanese medical students currently in Georgia on scholarships.
Georgia is a country in Eurasia, located on the crossroads of Eastern Europe and West Asia. Nestled between the Greater Caucasus and Lesser Caucasus mountain ranges, it is bounded on the west by the Black Sea, on the north and northeast by Russia, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, and to the southeast by Azerbaijan. The capital and largest city is Tbilisi. Georgia covers a territory of 69,700 square kilometers (26,911 sq. mi), and its 2015 population is about 3.75 million. Georgia is a unitary, semi-presidential republic, with the government elected through a representative democracy.
Georgia will be celebrating its 25th year of independence on May 26th, the same day that Guyana will be celebrating its 50th independence anniversary.
