Hon. Manzoor Nadir, M.P., Speaker of the National Assembly, was among the first set of speakers to address the 144th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly on March 21, 2022.
Speaker Nadir commenced his plea by linking the current global climate change issues with Russia’s growing invasion of Ukraine, stating that we can no longer act like it does not exist.
He further posited that Guyana continues to experience the damaging effects of climate change and made the call for definitive and binding resolutions by countries for progressive action in tackling climate change. In this regard, Nadir said,
“The one glue would be to have a resolution of Parliament. In this regard, today, I have been heartened to hear of the resolutions from Korea and Zimbabwe, with respect to binding governments”.
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon. Mohabir Nandlall, M.P., continued to make the call for countries to implement strong climate change actions when he made his address to the Assembly on March 23, 2022, reminding delegates that climate change is no longer an isolated and confined issue, but one that plagues every country in a unique way.
Turning his attention to Guyana’s position on climate change, Hon. Nandlall assured that Guyana will continue to do all it possibly can to attain zero carbon emission.
He then urged the Assembly to foster greater collaboration among members, with a special focus on greater assistance for smaller countries in the acquisition of resources and easier access to funding.
The 144th Assembly of the IPU, under the theme, Getting to Zero: Mobilizing Parliaments to act on climate change, will conclude with a climate change outcome document on March 24, 2022.
