Georgetown, Guyana — The second day of the 9th Annual Youth Parliament continued today with a series of engaging virtual sessions designed to prepare the Youth Parliamentarians for their upcoming Sittings. These sessions provided participants with valuable insights and practical skills essential for their roles.
The morning session kicked off with a comprehensive workshop on The Art of Public Speaking, led by Ms. Monette Garnett-Christopher, the Chief Administrative Officer at the Parliament Office, alongside Mr. Sarfraz Yacoob, former Youth Parliamentarian. Their combined expertise provided the Youth Parliamentarians with vital techniques to enhance their public speaking abilities, a crucial skill for effective parliamentary participation.
Following this, Ms. Carlleta Charles, Parliamentary Executive Officer, conducted a detailed session on Standing Orders – Point of Order and Point of Clarification. This session was instrumental in familiarising the Youth Parliamentarians with parliamentary procedures, ensuring that they were well-prepared to navigate the formalities of the Sittings.
The final session of the day focused on Youth Leadership. This session was conducted by Ms. Sherry Ann Mangru, President of the Rotaract Club – New Amsterdam and Vice President of the Golden Om Dharmic Youth Organisation, alongside Mr. Shaquawn Gill, President of the University of Guyana’s Students’ Society (UGSS). Both presenters shared their leadership experiences and encouraged the participants to cultivate leadership qualities essential for driving positive change.
Throughout these interactive sessions, the Youth Parliamentarians actively engaged with the presenters, sharing their perspectives on various topical issues, and demonstrating a deep understanding of the subjects discussed.
Tomorrow, the Youth Parliamentarians will assemble at the Public Buildings, Brickdam, Georgetown, for a tour of the Parliament Chamber, followed by a grand rehearsal in preparation for the Sittings. This marks a significant step as they gear up for the formal proceedings of the 9th Annual Youth Parliament.
