In a thrilling semifinal showdown at the Speaker's National Youth Debating Competition 2023, the Young Influencers Programme Youth Group emerged victorious over the University of Guyana's UGSS Tain Campus Youth Group. The intense debate took place today in the Parliament Chamber of the Public Buildings, Brickdam, Georgetown, captivating both virtual and audience in attendance with thought-provoking arguments and eloquent oratory skills.
Both teams showcased their mastery of critical thinking and command of the English language, making it a close contest until the final moments.
Ms. Corissa McClure of the winning Young Influencer Programme Youth Group won the Best Speaker Award for this matchup.
The combined average scores for the judges were as follows: for the Proposition, the (UGSS) Tain Campus Youth Group, 181 points, and 197.6 points for the Opposing side, the Young Influencer Programme Youth Group.
The debate was centered around the compelling moot "Guyana will fall prey to the natural resources curse."
Throughout the debate, the Young Influencers Programme Youth Group displayed exceptional teamwork and organization, carefully constructing their arguments and effectively countering their opponents' points. Their well-researched evidence and logical reasoning allowed them to sway the judges and the audience in their favour.
On the other side, the UGSS Tain Campus Youth Group, representing the esteemed University of Guyana, displayed commendable debating skills. They presented a strong case with well-articulated points and backed their arguments with scholarly references. Despite their compelling performance, they fell short by a narrow margin.
The judges, comprising prominent academics and previous Youth Parliamentarians, praised both teams for their intellectual prowess and applauded their dedication to public speaking. They commended the Young Influencers Programme Youth Group for their impeccable delivery and strategic approach, which earned them the edge over their opponents.
With this victory, the Young Influencers Programme Youth Group secures their spot in the final of the Speaker's National Youth Debating Competition 2023. They will now go head-to-head with the winners of the other semifinal to compete for the prestigious championship title.
