This week’s edition will examine another four (4) former Members of Parliament visited by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Sherlock Isaacs, A.A., and his team.
Former Member of Parliament and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Samuel (Rudy) Insanally, O.R., C.C.H., said there is a need for a harmonious working relationship among the current Members of Parliament, a sentiment to which Mr. Isaacs agreed.
During discussions, Mr. Insanally reflected on times when members had heated debates in the House and dined together in the M.P.’s lounge while having friendly discussions.
“This visit is most welcoming”, said Mr. Insanally as he expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the visit.
“In the final analysis the Speaker Ramkaran will always turn to you, Mr. Isaacs, for advice,” said Mr. Norman Whittaker, former Member of Parliament, Minister in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development and Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, as he reminisced of many times the then Speaker of the National Assembly sought advice from Mr. Isaacs during any dispute on the interpretation of the Standing Orders.
After receiving his Plaque and Certificate, Mr. Whittaker expressed his gratitude for the visit.
The outreach programme was initiated to visit, express thanks, and check on the welfare of former Members of the National Assembly of the Parliament of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.
During discussions with the Clerk of the National Assembly, Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, former Member of Parliament, Minister of Education, and Minister of Public Service, expressed his fond memories of his time at Parliament and shared his passion for fishing.
According to the Clerk, this was his way of checking on the welfare of the former Members of Parliament who spent long hours in the National Assembly debating policies and making laws for the good Government of Guyana.
“The exercise of remembering former Members of Parliament is a good one,” said Mr. Rashleigh E. Jackson, former Member of Parliament, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, as he expressed his gratitude for the visit.
In highlighting some of the lighter times in Parliament, Mr. Jackson said “I must say that sometimes I look back with great pride and pleasure of the days spent in Parliament”.
When asked, by his successors, about any notable differences in the House, Mr. Jackson’s usual response is, “One obvious one is that there seemed to have more humour then than now”
During his visit with the former Members of Parliament, the Clerk and the Members reminisced about their past experiences in the National Assembly and their travels abroad to various jurisdictions to attend conferences, seminars, and training programmes.
The former Members were presented with Certificates of Appreciation, Plaques for their years of dedicated service, and COVID packages containing vitamins and cleaning supplies, among other things.
Mr. Isaacs, during each visit, assured the former Members of Parliament that his secretariat will continue checking on their welfare on a quarterly basis.
