Guyana Delegation attends the 146th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Bahrain

A Guyanese Parliamentary Delegation, headed by the Hon. Manzoor Nadir, M.P., Speaker of the National Assembly, and Member of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), is attending the 146th Assembly of the IPU and related meetings at the Exhibition World Bahrain (EWB), in Manama, Bahrain, during the period March 11 - 15, 2023.
The Delegation is also comprised of Hon. Mohabir Anil Nandlall, S.C., M.P., Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, and the Hon. Dawn Hastings-Williams, M.P., who also serve on the Governing Council of the IPU; Hon. Dr. Vindhya Persaud, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, and Member of the IPU’s Bureau of Women Parliamentarians; Hon. Savitri Sonia Parag, Minister of the Public Service, and Member of the IPU’s Bureau of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development; Mr. Lenox Shuman, M.P., Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly; Mr. Sherlock Isaacs, A.A., Clerk of the National Assembly, and Member of the IPU’s Association of Secretaries General; and Ms. Carlleta Charles, Parliamentary Executive Officer, and Secretary to the Delegation.
The Assembly will see a General Debate on the theme, “Promoting peaceful coexistence and inclusive societies: Fighting intolerance”. Also on the agenda for the week of activities are meetings of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, focusing on cybercrimes, and women’s leadership addressing insecurity and crises with regard to water security, climate security, and peaceful coexistence. The Committee on Sustainable Development will address climate change and sustainable development.
The Governing Council will convene to, inter alia, consider applications for membership, hear presentations from all bodies of the IPU and elect Members to the Executive Committee.
Hon. Ministers Persaud and Parag are up for re-election to the Bureaus they serve.
The 146th Assembly brings together 137 member Parliaments and a number of associate members and observers globally.
