A two-member team is currently in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to represent Guyana at the 11th Commonwealth Youth Parliament from November 20 - 25, 2022, under the theme Youth Involvement in Parliamentary Democracy.
For this year’s session, Bibi Wazeeda Yassin represents the Government for the New Political Movement, while Mr. Leon Bailey Beaton sits on the Opposition Bench for the National Labour Party.
Bibi Wazeeda Yassin and Mr. Leon Bailey Beaton respectively copped the Best Speaker Award in the 6th and 7th Annual Youth Parliament, hosted by the Parliament of Guyana.
The 11th Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP) is hosted by the Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad on behalf of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Caribbean, Atlantic, and Americas Region.
During the week-long programme, the Youth Parliamentarians will participate in various Panel discussions, debate a mock Parliamentary Bill and also benefit from mentorship sessions with current Members of Parliament from other jurisdictions.
The 11th Commonwealth Youth Parliament has brought together fifty-eight young people aged 18 to 29 from 33 Commonwealth jurisdictions. Those representatives hail from nine CPA Branches, from areas which are as follows: Africa, Australia, Asia, British Islands, and the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Americas, and Atlantic, Canada, India, Pacific, and South-East Asia.
The Commonwealth Youth Parliament is an annual event designed to introduce young Commonwealth citizens to the role and purpose of Parliaments as democratic institutions and providers of good governance. Organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), it allows attendees to meet other young people from across the Commonwealth, empowering them to shape their jurisdictions and engage with their local Legislature.
This is the first physical event since the 10th CYP in New Delhi, India, in November 2019.
