Beijing, China – August 22, 2024 – Hon. Faizal Jaffarally, M.P., Member of Parliament of Guyana, delivered a significant address during Panel 4 of the Interregional Seminar on the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Parliaments of Developing Countries. The panel, focused on "Developing Democracy Suited to National Conditions to Provide Strong Underpinnings for Modernization," was hosted by Mr. Yang Zhenwu, Chairman of the NPC Social Development Affairs Committee, at the International Hall, Beijing International Hotel.
In his remarks, MP Jaffarally emphasised Guyana's commitment to national development, highlighting the country's ongoing efforts to improve housing, healthcare, and education. He pointed to the national development strategy and the poverty reduction strategy as key initiatives driving progress in reducing poverty and enhancing the quality of life for all citizens.
MP Jaffarally also underscored the Parliament of Guyana's dedication to strengthening the democratic process through the establishment of four standing committees—Economic Services, Foreign Affairs, Natural Resources, and Social Services—chaired on a rotational basis by both Government and Opposition members.
"We are creating new opportunities for development by stimulating investments, and we look to the future with the hope that we can overcome the challenges to our political, economic, and social progress," said MP Jaffarally. He also highlighted the challenges faced by developing nations like Guyana, including the burden of debt, reduced development assistance, and protectionist barriers, exacerbated by international tensions and uncertainty.
In his closing remarks, MP Jaffarally stressed the importance of international cooperation and interdependence, particularly for small nations like Guyana, in navigating the complexities of globalisation and ensuring sustainable growth and welfare.
The keynote address at the seminar was delivered by Mr. Song Rui, Deputy Secretary-General of the NPC Standing Committee. The event brought together parliamentarians from various developing countries to discuss strategies for achieving the SDGs and promoting sustainable development in line with national conditions.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), in collaboration with the National People’s Congress (NPC) of the People’s Republic of China, organised the seminar to foster parliamentary dialogues, knowledge-sharing, and cooperation in support of the SDGs, ensuring that sustainable development is equitable, effective, and inclusive for all.
