PARLIAMENT OF GUYANA PARTICIPATES IN IPU BRIEFING ON UN PEACEBUILDING

The Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Office of the Permanent Observer in New York invited Members of Parliament of its member Legislatures to participate in the second of a series of Briefings on United Nations (UN) processes, which was held on 18th November, 2020.
The Parliament of Guyana was represented, at the Briefing, by Hon. Manzoor Nadir, MP, Speaker of the National Assembly; Hon. Minister Kwame McCoy, MP, Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister; Hon. Members Dr Cummings, MP, Ms. Flue-Bess, MP, and Ms. Philadelphia, MP; and Ms. Carlleta Charles, Parliamentary Executive Officer.
The Briefing allowed for Members of Parliament to become familiar with the work of the IPU, specifically focussing on reviewing the UN Peacebuilding architecture. In addition to providing an overview of peacebuilding, the session examined the UN’s three legs of peacebuilding: the Commission, the Fund and the Office (recently named the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs.
The Briefing was chaired by Hon. Patricia Torsney, Permanent Observer to the UN and the Presenters included Mr. Oscar Taranco, UN Assistant Secretary-General, Peacebuilding Support Office; Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, Group of Independent Eminent Persons on Peacebuilding; and Ms. Jacqueline O’Neill, Canada’s Ambassador for Women, Peace and Security.
Briefing No. 1 focused on Sustainable Development Goal 1: end poverty in all its forms everywhere.
