On January 27, 2015, the Parliament Office welcomed students from the Georgetown International Academy (GIA). The GIA, originally the Georgetown American School, was founded in 1971 in order to provide an American education to the dependents of United States’ citizens who are resident in Guyana. With time, others in the business, professional, and consular communities joined this school, thereby creating an international school community in Guyana.
During the visit by the students, the Speaker of the House, Mr. Raphael Trotman, Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly, Ms. Hermina Gilgeours, and Acting Assistant Clerk of the National Assembly, Ms. Deslyn West, made presentations on the functions of Parliament. Students also had the opportunity to learn about a diverse range of topics which included the roles of the Members of Parliament, what Bills are, how they are presented, and the enforcement of laws, among other things.
The Speaker of the House also gave the students a lesson on the history of the Parliament Building and the past Presidents of Guyana. He encouraged the students to study hard to achieve their goals and urged them to take up roles in the public sector where they can serve their country and/or Guyana.
Students were given the opportunity to ask questions, have their pictures taken in the Parliament Chamber and given a tour of the building and the different sections.
