Breastfeeding jaundice or another health problem that requires evaluation and treatment Breast milk jaundice Your breastfed baby is older than 2 weeks and still has jaundice. In addition, many babies have birthmarks that fade away slowly over time without treatment. But some birthmarks may grow larger before they disappear, and others are permanent. Your pediatrician will advise whether a birthmark should be treated or left alone. Newborns and young infants may develop many different rashes in the first few months of life. Use only soaps and skin-care products that are made especially for babies; other products may contain perfumes, dyes, alcohol, and other chemicals that can cause irritation. A daily bath is fine for your baby, and while unnecessary, it can be part of a consistent bedtime routine. Just make sure the water temperature is warm against the inside of your wrist or elbow, and limit the time length of the bath. Keep your baby clean by washing all traces of food from his face and hands, and wash the diaper area thoroughly during changes. Use plain water and absorbent cotton or a fresh washcloth for cleaning your baby - Using commercial wipes is unnecessary. But if you do, choose ones made for babies; those made for adults contain alcohol, which may dry and irritate the skin. Coping With Diaper Rash Many babies have a mild rash in the diaper area at some point during infancy. Common causes of this rash include a diaper that has been left on for too long or irritation from diarrhea or loose stools. Chemicals that form in the wet or soiled diaper irritate the skin, making it vulnerable to infection. The rash usually appears as redness or bumps on skin surfaces that are in direct contact with a wet or soiled diaper. These surfaces include the lower abdomen, the buttocks, the genitals, and the folds of the thighs. Treating diaper rash is important because damaged skin becomes more easily irritated by contact with urine and stools. In addition, babies tend to get diaper rashes when they are being treated with antibiotics, which kill friendly bacteria and allow an increase in loose stools and an overgrowth of yeasts normally found on the skin. If you use disposable diapers that close tightly around the thighs and abdomen, make sure they are loose enough so that air can circulate inside of them. If your baby gets a diaper rash, apply a zinc oxide­ based cream or petroleum jelly to the rash, and change her diaper frequently. Pink, patchy flat marks in certain locations (ie, nape of the neck, mid-forehead, midline upper lip, around the sides of the nose, eyelids) are known as salmon patches or stork bites.
