Region 9: Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo was the focus of the most recent outreach to schools by Members of Parliament last Thursday, June 26 and Friday, June 27, 2014.
The visiting team comprised: Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Raphael Trotman; two Government representatives- Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo and Mr. Faizal Jafferally; A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Members of Parliament Christopher Jones, Mr. Sydney Allicock and Annette Ferguson; from the Alliance For Change (AFC) Member of Parliament Trevor Williams; and five parliamentary staff.
The primary objectives of the outreach programme is to build awareness of the role and importance of the Parliament in sustaining democracy and promoting good governance, to encourage youth participation and partnership in the decision-making process and to develop a sense of civic pride among young persons.
With this in mind, the team, on its way to Lethem, stopped at the Woweta Primary and Nursery schools, the Bina Hill Institute and the Annai Secondary School. On the second day they visited the Araipaima Primary, the St. Ignatius Nursery and the St. Ignatius Secondary. At each school they engaged the students about the work and impact of Parliament, and its relevance for the lives of young people. The outreach took an interesting and unexpected twist at the St. Ignatius Secondary School as the MPs not only interacted with the students and teachers about various aspects of the Parliament, but they also joined them in a game of tennis.
In keeping with the current football fever and to the delight of the students, the MPs presented the schools with two goal posts and footballs. To date, the Assembly has visited schools in Regions 2, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10. It is important to note that these outreaches are a success primarily because of the support of the teachers and Officials in the various Regions. The Members of Parliament Outreach to Schools is expected to continue in October when the Assembly resumes after the annual recess.
