Guyana Delegation attends the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Switzerland

A Guyanese Parliamentary Delegation, headed by the Hon. Manzoor Nadir, M.P., Speaker of the National Assembly, and Member of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), is attending the 148th Assembly of the IPU and related meetings at the International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG), Switzerland, during the period March 23 - 27, 2024.
The Delegation is also comprised of Hon. Mohabir Anil Nandlall, S.C., M.P., Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, and the Hon. Dawn Hastings-Williams, M.P., who also serve on the Governing Council of the IPU; Hon. Savitri Sonia Parag, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, and Member of the IPU’s Bureau of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development; Mr. Sherlock Isaacs, A.A., Clerk of the National Assembly, and Member of the IPU’s Association of Secretaries General; and Ms. Carlleta Charles, Parliamentary Executive Officer, and Secretary to the Delegation.
The Assembly will see a General Debate on the theme, “Parliamentary diplomacy: Building bridges for peace and understanding”. The week of activities are as follows:
- Election of the President of the 148th Assembly.
- Consideration of requests for the inclusion of an emergency item in the Assembly agenda.
- General Debate on the theme Parliamentary diplomacy: Building bridges for peace and understanding.
- Special accountability segment on the implementation of IPU resolutions and other decisions.
- Addressing the social and humanitarian impact of autonomous weapon systems and artificial intelligence. (Standing Committee on Peace and International Security)
- Partnerships for climate action: Promoting access to affordable green energy, and ensuring innovation, responsibility and equity. (Standing Committee on Sustainable Development)
- Reports of the Standing Committees.
- Approval of the subject items for the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security and for the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development for the 150th Assembly and appointment of the co-Rapporteurs.
The Assembly is expected to conclude with the adoption of an outcome document on the overall theme of the General Debate.
The IPU, founded more than 130 years ago, is a global organisation comprising 180 National Parliaments. It facilitates parliamentary democracy and supports parliamentarians to promote peace via useful platforms to build sustainable relationships and network with each other.
