New Deputy Speaker Elected

The position of Deputy Speaker came from the Opposition benches. Mr. Lenox R. O’Dell Shuman, M.P., one of two nominees, was elected for the position.
Mr. Shuman is the first person of Indigenous decent to hold that position.
This first-time Member of Parliament represents the Coalition of recently formed parties: A New and United Guyana, Liberty and Justice Party, and The New Movement (ANUG, LJP &TNM).
He was nominated by Prime Minister, Hon. Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Anthony Phillips, M.S.S., M.P., and seconded by Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Hon. Gail Teixeira M.P.
The other nominee was former Speaker of the National Assembly in the Eleventh Parliament and Former Minister of Natural Resources of the preceding coalition APNU+AFC Government, Mr. Raphael Trotman, M.P.
The last person to fill the position of the Deputy speaker was the late Deborah Backer.
