The second batch of work study students for 2014 were treated to a tour of the Castellani House, Art Gallery by the Speaker of the National Assembly. The speaker noted that the initiative behind the tour was to engage the students in the Art and Culture that the country has to offer. He also mentioned that the National Assembly has already launched a “Child Art Competition” which engages the youths of Guyana to express themselves through the use of art and allows them to benefit and contribute to the culture.
The students viewed work done by renowned Sculptor Winslow Craig and Artist Philbert Gajadhar and were privileged to receive the tour from Mr. Craig and Mr. Gajadhar themselves. The main collection viewed was “Saving Seeds” which is currently in exhibit. Mr. Gajadhar explained that the various paintings and sculptors serves as social commentary on the current issues in society concerning the family, such as the single parent aspect and the teenage pregnancy. Craig mentioned that his sculptures focused more on the single parent mothers and how they have emerged in recent times and have to play both roles of mother and father. However, Gajadhar’s portraits focused more on the family as a whole and various issues families are faced with.
Students also viewed works by locally renowned artist Phillip Moore which focused more on the Guyanese folklore and culture, which incorporate aspects from all the various cultures; among others pieces of art.
