March 8 marks the International Women’s Day, which celebrates the achievements of women in all spheres of life. On this occasion, the National Assembly of the Parliament of Guyana joins women all over the world and particularly in Guyana, to commemorate this day.
This year’s theme, “Inspiring Change,” could not have come at a better time, especially when Women are playing pivotal roles in leadership capacities all across Guyana. Guyanese women have registered successes, both at the regional and international level, in achieving gender equality, empowering women and elevating them politically, economically, socially, and culturally. Guyana’s maintenance of a high ranking in the Global Status of Women in Parliament is a testament to this. These outstanding contributions of Guyanese women to the political, social and economic life of the country through the years cannot be ignored.
The National Assembly would like to put a print on the celebration of Women’s Day this year by honoring:
- Mrs. Deborah J Backer, Former Deputy Speaker and Former Member of Parliament for 14 Years of dedicated service;
- Mrs. Pauline Sukhai, Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Member of Parliament for 20 years of dedicated service;
- Ms. Shirley Edwards, former Member of Parliament for 18 years of dedicated service;
- Mrs. Philomena Sahoye-Shury, former Member of Parliament for 15 years of dedicated service; and
- Ms. Eleanor Coddett, member of staff for 30 years of dedicated service to the Public Service.
