Georgetown, Guyana – September 25, 2026: Auditor General, Mr. Deodat Sharma, today officially handed over the Auditor General’s Report for the fiscal year ended 2025 to the Hon. Manzoor Nadir, M.P., Speaker of the National Assembly. The brief ceremony took place in the Parliament Chamber at the Public Buildings, Brickdam, Georgetown.

The handing-over ceremony was completed ahead of the customary September deadline, in adherence to Article 223 (3) of the Constitution of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, which mandates that "the Auditor General shall submit his or her audit reports to the Speaker of the National Assembly, who shall cause them to be laid before the National Assembly."

This year’s submission marks the twenty-second report presented by Mr. Sharma during his tenure as Auditor General and the fifteenth consecutive occasion on which the Audit Office has submitted its report by the statutory deadline.

In his remarks, Mr. Sharma highlighted the significance of timely and effective reporting to the Legislature and, ultimately, the people of Guyana. He noted that as Guyana’s National Budget and public infrastructure programme continue to expand, the Audit Office has had to strengthen its capacity and adapt its auditing approaches to respond to the increasing value and complexity of public expenditure.

Mr. Sharma pointed to several areas of institutional strengthening undertaken by the Audit Office, including professional training for auditors and engineers, the review and enhancement of Audit Work Programmes, training in the processing of superannuation benefits, cybersecurity and data protection, and participation in regional and international capacity-building programmes.

Along with the main Auditor General’s Report, Mr. Sharma submitted a Performance Audit Report on the Implementation of the Solar Home Energy Programme in Guyana’s Hinterland and Riverine Communities. He said this brings the total to 19 Performance Audit Reports issued during his tenure.

Speaker Nadir, in receiving the reports, acknowledged the important constitutional relationship between the Audit Office, the National Assembly and the Public Accounts Committee in ensuring scrutiny of the management and expenditure of public funds.

Among those attending the ceremony were Hon. Bishop Juan Edghill, M.P., Minister of Public Works; Mr. Vishnu D. Panday, M.P.; Mr. Sanjeev Datadin, M.P.; Ms. Nandranie Singh, M.P.; Mr. Ganesh Mahipaul, M.P.; and Ms. Juretha Fernandes, M.P., members of the Public Accounts Committee.

Also present were Mr. Sherlock E. Isaacs, A.A., Clerk of the National Assembly; Ms. Hermina Gilgeours, Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly; Ms. Deslyn West, Assistant Clerk of the National Assembly; Mr. Sukrishnalall Pasha, Finance Secretary, Ministry of Finance; and Ms. Jennifer Chapman, Accountant General, along with senior officials and staff of the Audit Office of Guyana, Ministry of Finance and Parliament Office.

The Auditor General’s Report for the fiscal year ended 2025 will become a public document following its formal laying in the National Assembly at its next Sitting.
